Come collocare all’interno del panorama letterario del secondo Novecento un romanzo come Il sorriso dell’ignoto marinaio? E che ruolo affidare alla maniera sperimentale della sua scrittura? Se Il sorriso è un romanzo storico in linea con il recupero del genere sviluppatosi nella seconda metà del Novecento, tuttavia questa categorizzazione non risponde del tutto alla domanda da cui scaturisce questa indagine. Nel saggio si è scelto quindi di ricorrere ad alcune categorie teoriche, di dominio generale, ma non sempre applicate al testo di Consolo, come lo studio sul paratesto di Genette e le teorie di Benjamin, utili, quest’ultime, per l’analisi della struttura di un romanzo che procede per frammenti e intervalli. La forma ellittica della scrittura di Consolo, sia a livello di disposizione del contenuto, che a livello stilistico e formale, rivela una certa tensione all’allegorismo. Il risultato è un romanzo che si muove nel solco dello Sperimentalismo degli anni Settanta e che, superando il continuum temporale, arriva a parlare del tempo presente. E proprio la struttura sembra mirare alla creazione di un lettore come produttore critico rispetto ai fatti che vengono narrati, in grado cioè di fermarsi, nell’intervallo allegorico tra diegesi e documento, e interrogarsi sulla veridicità o meno dei fatti. Consolo scrive dunque Il sorriso fra Neoavanguardia e Postmoderno, non identificandosi con nessuna delle due istanze, ma rendendo presente una “zona” del romanzo del secondo Novecento che vede il suo sviluppo proprio negli anni Sessanta e Settanta.

How can a novel such as The Smile of the Unknown Mariner be placed in the literary panorama of the second half of the twentieth century? What role can be entrusted to its experimental writing? If The Smile is a historical novel in line with the recovery of this literary genre during the second half of the twentieth century, then this categorization does not answer entirely to the question that is the starting point of the present research. Therefore, in this essay a choice has been made to resort to some theoretical categories of general domain, even though these were not always applied to Consolo’s text, such as the study on paratext by Genette and Benjamin’s theories which were useful to the analysis of the structure of a novel that evolves through fragments and intervals. Consolo’s elliptical writing, regarding content, style and its formal aspect, reveals a certain tension towards allegory. The result is a novel that follows the Italian Experimentalism of the Seventies and that, bypassing the temporal continuum, manages to deal with the present. It is indeed the very structure of the novel that aims at creating a reader who becomes a critic of the facts that have been told, someone who is capable of stopping, in the allegoric interval between diegesis and document, and of questioning the truthfulness of the facts. Consolo writes The Smile of the Unknown Mariner between the Italian literary movement Neovanguardia (New Vanguard) and Postmodernism and without identifying with either of the two, he creates a “place” for the novel during the second half of the twentieth century, that developed precisely in the Sixties and Seventies.
