Scopo di questo saggio è dimostrare che il realismo stregato è una chiave di lettura centrale per interpretare Menzogna e sortilegio. Il realismo stregato ha una straordinaria capacità prensile e inclusiva verso il reale e i suoi intrecci, perché racconta una totalità a partire dal basso: dalla prospettiva psichica e metaforica di un universo femminile psichicamente e/o socialmente subalterno, e tuttavia mosso da una potente vitalità e aspirazione al dominio.

Menzogna e sortilegio si presenta in maniera sistematica, e con diverse tonalità espressive e stilistiche, come la storia di quattro streghe – Elisa, voce narrante della storia, sua nonna Cesira, sua madre Anna e Concetta, madre di Edoardo –, del loro «sortilegio», e della loro «menzogna». Attraverso una complessa strategia inclusiva di scrittura e di stile, l’autrice modella nella forma del testo un punto di vista per un verso spietato su questo universo di donne madri figlie, e per l’altro profondamente sintonico con esso.

Aim of this essay is to demonstrate that the bewitched realism is a central key to interpret House of Liars (the literal translation of the title is: Lie and Sorcery). The bewitched realism has an extraordinary prehensile and inclusive capacity towards reality and its plot, because it creates a totality starting from the bottom: from the psychic and metaphorical perspective of a female universe psychically and/or socially subordinate, and yet driven by a powerful vitality and aspiration to the domain. House of Liars presents itself in a systematic way, and with different expressive and stylistic tones, as the story of four witches  Elisa, narrating voice of the story, her grandmother Cesira, her mother Anna and Concetta, Edoardo’s mother , of their «sorcery» and of their «lie». Through a complex inclusive strategy of writing and style, Elsa Morante models this female universe through a point of view at the same time ruthless and deeply in tune with it.
